You’re now free to buy, sell and drink raw milk in Arkansas!

Moo’ve over pasteurized milk!

Raw milk enthusiasts have reason to celebrate after legislation was passed allowing the sale of unpasteurized milk. The law allows for monthly sales of up to 500 gallons of raw milk on farms, but there are some rules. You can not sell the milk at farmer’s markets or at retail outlets. Many states have different laws and the direct sale of raw milk remains illegal in 18 of them. Amish farmers have even been raided by SWAT teams in crackdowns on raw milk in ridiculous displays that undermine the authority of government in the eyes of the people.

Pasteurization is the process by which harmful bacteria is killed by heating the milk at a specific temperature for a set amount of time. It was invented by Louis Pasteur in the late 1880’s and contributed to the “Germ Theory of Disease” which revolutionized medicine. Raw milk enthusiasts believe that the drink tastes better before it’s pasteurized and they’ve now won the right to enjoy the reportedly sweet-tasting beverage at their leisure.

Arkansas farmers are required to post signage that their products are unpasteurized. Buyers are assumed to take the risk for any health problems incurred from drinking raw milk, but at least they have the choice. People should be free to eat or drink whatever they like, provided they harm no one else.

How’s that freedom taste, Arkansas?
