Women’s Convention Gives Opening Speech Slot To … Bernie Sanders

The Women’s March chose Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to give the opening night address at its upcoming Michigan convention, an organizer announced Wednesday.

Sanders is set to address over 3,000 women the first night of the Convention, an event meant to teach women activist skills and to help them gear up for the 2018 elections, reports The Detroit Free Press.

“I’m honored to join the women at the front lines of our struggle for economic, social, racial and environmental justice.  In January, millions of women came out in an extraordinary and unprecedented display of power and resistance,” Sanders said about speaking at the Women’s Convention.”Now more than ever, we must support the leadership of women across the country and fight together to advance our progressive agenda.”

The Women’s Convention, organized by the Women’s March, is a three-day event towards the end of October. At $295 a ticket, women are heading to Detroit to learn how to fundraise and be an ally, as well as focusing on issues like “reproductive justice” and facing the most “misogynistic administration” in history.

A Women’s March organizer, Tamika D. Mallory pointed to Sanders’ track record with progressive values and how millennials favor him.

“We believe as women … that we ought to have more than just women at the Women’s Convention,” Mallory said to the Detroit Free Press.”People want to hear from the leadership from within our government who can give us some insight about what’s happening … so we can know what we need to do to be able organize.”

The theme for this year’s convention is “Reclaiming My Time,” in reference to Democratic California Rep. Maxine Water’s statement during a hearing earlier this year. Waters will also be speaking at the convention.
