Woman Dies After Receiving Illegal Butt Implants

A woman died after receiving silicone butt implants from an uncertified doctor in Queens. Kelly Mayhew was found unresponsive in a Queens home on Saturday when authorities found her. The landlord had previously been suspicious about women frequently coming and going from the flat where the surgery took place.

Mayhew, who worked at BET, had driven to Far Rockaway in Queens with her mother after she had contacted the unlicensed doctor through a friend. The cosmetic surgeon arrived and began injecting silicone into Mayhew’s butt, but “panicked” when the patient began having difficulty breathing, and convulsing. At that moment, the unknown “surgeon” ran out of the house and fled in a gray SUV.

Authorities pronounced her dead at the scene, but the official cause of death will be officially determined by a medical examiner by the end of this week.

Mayhew’s boyfriend described her as being insecure about her butt, constantly worrying about her shape and size. She saw nothing but flaws in herself.

BET released a statement about the deceased: “We are saddened by the death of our colleague and friend Kelly Mayhew. Our heart goes out to her family and we extend our deepest sympathies for their loss.”

This isn’t the first case of someone dying from unlicensed doctors giving people butt implants. Last year a woman died in a hotel in the Meatpacking district, where she had received a similar injection of silicone. The person who performed that surgery, Tamara Blaine, was caught and charged with second degree manslaughter, as well as first-degree assault.

Libertarians make the argument that a person should be allowed to do whatever they like with their bodies, provided they harm no one else. That certainly should apply here, however the person who performs these kinds of operations ought to be held responsible for their actions. It would be interesting for the sake of argument to find out whether or not this shady doctor had any sort of contractual agreement with their clients such as a damage waiver or anything of the sort. Of course that won’t change the fact that the government demands licensing for such practices. But it’s worthwhile to ask what the cost would be in a free society if there were no such restrictions on medical licensing. Accidents such as this would likely occur, but the risks that people take would be directly laid to blame on those who take them.
