Will Nazi Flag Finally Wave Goodbye After Latest Racist Shooting?

By Ryan Lazarus

Last week a neo-Nazi named Dylan Verdeck shot and murdered 9 jewish people in a synagogue in Südensingen, Germany. This horrific tragedy has made the German people sick to their stomachs. Germans have tried for decades to move on from the evils of the Third Reich and part of that effort has been by banning the Nazi flag. That flag stands as a symbol of genocide, slavery, and countless other crimes. Despite the national ban it still flies high atop the government flagpoles of Südensingen.

Many Südensingen locals still cling intensely to their ancestry. They fail to recognize why people are offended, even after this most recent massacre. I spoke with Südensingen resident, Adolph Weishaupt, to get his take on whether he believes it is still appropriate to fly such a controversial flag:

“I don’t see the [Nazi] flag as hateful, it’s about heritage. My grandfather Heinrich was a brave Nazi soldier. He never tried to kill any Jews or innocent people. He only tried to defend the right of his fellow Aryans to exterminate those who pseudo-scientifically at the time were considered to be less human. My family’s restaurant Schnitzel Führur made some of the best schnitzel and sour kraut during the 1940s. The restaurant’s interior design was dedicated to the Third Reich’s cause. The Nazi flag brings me a sense of nostalgia and I don’t see why we should let it go. Nothings says peace, home, and harmony like Nazi red with large black swastikas.”

Mr. Weishaupt is just one of millions of backwards Südensingen residents that feels this way. It appears the rest of Germany is stuck with this scar.
