White House Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday the White House is not concerned with how long it takes the Senate to work on Obamacare repeal legislation.
“The president is focused on getting it right, not getting it fast,” Sanders said while filling in for press secretary Sean Spicer at the daily press briefing. “We’re taking the appropriate steps to ensure the American people get the healthcare they deserve.”
The comments come just one day after the lower chamber passed the American Health Care Act on their second attempt by a narrow margin.
The House bill passed after weeks of renewed negotiations after leadership pulled the bill off the floor due to a lack of consensus between members in March.
The Obamacare repeal legislation is expected to be dramatically changed in the upper chamber, with a number of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle criticizing the legislation in its current form.
Moderates have expressed concerns over cuts to Medicaid while conservatives have said the bill needs improvement.
“It’s going to take a little bit of work to get me to a yes vote, but I do have an open mind,” GOP Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul told Fox News.
A number of senators said they are crafting their own health-care reform legislation they feel is better suited to pass the upper chamber.
“The safest thing to say is there will be a Senate bill, but it will look at what the House has done and see how much of that we can incorporate in a product that works for us in reconciliation,” said Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri told The Washington Examiner.
Sanders said Trump is more concerned with passing the best legislation possible than getting is passed quickly.
“We expect them to take it up, meaning take up the conversation,” she told reporters. “This is a process, we haven’t put a timeline on it. We want to get it right, not get it fast.”
