*VIDEO* Is it legal to film a cop?

A brave citizen videotaped an encounter at a police checkpoint where he was confronted and told to stop recording. His quick thinking and understanding of the laws regarding prior restraint meant that he was informed enough to explain to the officers that they have no right to ask him to stop recording in public. America has laws against prior restraint. It means that the government can not censor an activity before it takes place such as a video recording. This is an important limit on government authority as it guarantees the citizens the ability to free speech to report on what the government is doing.

Random checkpoints are indeed ineffective overall. Statistics prove it. Citizens in a free country have no reason to be stopped randomly to be searched for criminal activity as it is a violation of their fourth amendment rights.

At one point during his verbal harassment by the officers the citizen snapped, “Now as part of the soldier class you may be able to get off on whatever perks you get from your job. But I’m not selling out my dignity to some crappy ass enforcement system you’ve got here that isn’t effective and all it is some big PR show you’ve got going on here.”

Bravo!
