ALTON, IL – The Alton Police Department is investigating an incident recorded on video where a patrol officer maces two handcuffed teenagers sitting in a holding cell.
The event came to light after a video of the incident was anonymously mailed to the president of the Alton NAACP, James Gray.
The video shows two teenagers sitting in a cell when an 18-year-veteran of the Alton Police Department enters the cell, says something, waves around a can of mace, and casually shoots the mace into the eyes of the two-shackled teenagers.
“It’s infuriating to me to see this officer coming in and spraying these kids who was handcuffed,” said Gray in and interview with CBS.
Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons assured the public that the incident will be “thoroughly investigated” and expressed disappointment at the release of the video.
