Uber Expansion Includes Commuter Plan

Uber is getting ready to broaden its target market to more than the weekend drinkers.

In a posting on Uber’s blog, the company announced Nov. 3 the testing of a new expansion plan specifically for commuters. Known as UberPool, the company will now offer fixed-rate rides that serves the San Francisco area.

“POOL TO SF matches you with another rider on the way to the city,” the post stated. “From 6-10am, Monday-Friday, commute on your own time and ride door-to-door for as low as $20.”

Rides from Palo Alto, CA will cost $20; Mountain View, CA costs $22; and San Jose, CA will cost $26. (RELATED: Bernie Sanders Bashes Uber, Uses It For All His Taxi Rides.)

UberPool determines how to service the commuters based on the similarity of their pickup locations, with each party only paying for their portion of the trip. “We match riders in a way that does not significantly increase total trip time…We map the route to be the most efficient possible. That means that sometimes you will be picked up first and dropped off second, but your total trip time will be minimized.” (RELATED: Watch Uber Driver Mace Violent And Drunk Customer In The Face [VIDEO])

A representative from Uber told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the motive for the new program developed because of the desire to solve common traveling problems. The goal remains efficient travel.(RELATED: Uber Offers Free First Rides Until UCF Wins A Football Game.)

Based on the post, UberPool will roughly cost at least 25 percent less than the cost of an UberX. If no other riders are picked up on your way to your destination, then you are charged the regular fee.

The Verge reported Nov. 3 that UberPool is unpopular with drivers because of concerns over receiving poor ratings from riders for having to wait on other customers. (RELATED: Study Claiming NY Uber Expansion Will Cost Jobs Slammed As Laughable Economics.)

The representative responded by saying “[a]necdotally we have heard positive feedback from drivers. The thing to keep in mind is that not only does uberPOOL allow two riders to share the cost of a ride, it’s also more efficient for the driver. So drivers tend to be on-trip earning money a larger percentage of the minutes of an hour.”

The program is the most recent part of Uber’s plan for an increased share of the consumer market.

The representative said that UberPool currently operates on in 12 cities worldwide and they expect to launch in more cities soon. In the US, the program is running in: Austin, Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC. In China, UberPool is operating in Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou. Additionally, it is in Bangalore, India and Paris, France.
