Two railroad employees were killed after being crushed by an Amtrak train at Union Station in Washington D.C., Tuesday night.
Amtrak services between Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia were suspended for hours Wednesday morning due to the incident. Trains are now operating at restricted speeds, Amtrak told NBC News.
The two workers were near the tracks when the train struck them near New York Avenue NE, a spokesperson for D.C. Fire and EMS confirmed to NBC. First responders were called to the scene around 11:55 Tuesday night.
The employees worked for CSX, a railroad company located in D.C. Railroad spokesman Rob Doolittle released a statement Wednesday morning, saying, “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of our employees.”
The only statement Amtrak has made thus far was via Twitter, saying, “Federal and local authorities say their investigation of an incident north of Washington, D.C. last night is not yet complete. Therefore, Amtrak service between Washington and Philadelphia remains disrupted due to a temporary track closure.”
Update: Service disruptions along the NEC continue due to ongoing investigation. We hope for restoration of service by mid-morning. pic.twitter.com/8TabQxIn8p
