In the past year the gay, conservative/alt-right, Trump-loving, provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos has skyrocketed to fame as he has pushed the boundaries of civilized discourse by challenging political correctness on every platform; from his articles at Breitbart to podiums at colleges around the United States. Now as of last night Milo finally crossed the line, at least according to Twitter, which has now permanently banned him from their social media platform following the confrontation between him (plus his followers) and Ghostbusters remake co-star, Leslie Jones.
Milo has long been critical of the Ghostbusters remake due to its blatant goals of promoting modern feminism, a movement which he has compared to cancer. This prompted him in recent days to poke jibes at Leslie Jones along the lines of the following tweet.
Yet Milo’s followers, which prior to his ban had reached the ranks of 300,000 plus, once directed by Milo towards Ms. Jones took the trolling to a new level, some going so far as to compare the black actress to a gorilla. This caused outrage by many on twitter who aided the hashtag #BanNero in going viral, which ultimately lead to Milo’s ban yesterday just hours before his major gay-conservative alliance program at the RNC national convention was to take place.
This then caused major outrage from right wing conservatives and libertarians. So much so that within hours the hashtag #freemilo was trending #1 world wide on Twitter. Which happened because it was seen for what it was, a violation of free speech, if not legally (seeing as Milo did break the twitters rule contract) at the very least and more importantly, philosophically. Especially for a site that supposedly prides itself on being a platform for free speech.
Our very own contributor to the Libertarian Republic, Julie Borowiski went on to tweet:
You put yourself out there online, you're going to get hate. Deal with it or remove yourself from Internet. #freemilo

Regardless of what you think of Milo or his followers, we should all be able to agree that what sites like Twitter are doing is setting a dangerous precedent for censorship. By having the justifiably legal right to make vague user agreement contracts and then ban or suppress those users that are the most provocative (which are usually of a non-liberal persuasion as the recent Facebook scandal) creates a slippery slope into the territory of bans on purely political grounds. Something that all of us who claim to be in the pursuit of liberty should be vehemently opposed to.
