In one of the most shocking developments in American history, Donald Trump has defeated Hillary Clinton to become the next President of the United States. Trump was apparently able to ride a wave of white, working-class anger to pull off an unbelievable upset.
Based on early reports, Democratic turnout for Clinton was not what it was for President Obama in 2012, while Trump gained ground in blue-collar areas. Though nearly all predictors thought Clinton would easily win the Presidency, the Republican nominee was able to keep the race close in states where he was not expected to compete.
The victory by Trump marks the coming to fruition of a political revolution. It apparently comes as blowback against progressive advances in various economic and social areas over the past decade. In addition, the billionaire businessman’s rhetoric against an alleged influx of undocumented workers and “unfair” trade deals seemingly helped to ignite many who were once considered “Reagan” Democrats.
It is currently unpredictable how much of the President-elect’s agenda will be able to be enacted, including the infamous “wall” upon which he so arduously campaigned. Nonetheless, his victory no doubt changes the dynamics of American elections forever, and pollsters will likely be viewed with ire.
