8 Libertarian Musicians You Should be Listening To

[dropcap size=big]A[/dropcap]re you tired of the left-wing dominating the music and arts? Struggling to find any messages of liberty in a predominantly liberal field? Well, you’re not alone. Thankfully, we at The Libertarian Republic have compiled a list of 8 libertarian artists of all genres for you to listen to.

8.) Dean Marroni

Dean is a British rapper with great flow and even better lyrics. His leanings are more anarchistic – but his beats are organized and his messaged is delivered efficiently. If you haven’t heard of Dean, definitely check out the song below. You won’t be disappointed.

7.) Payday Monsanto

Payday Monsanto, aka Payzee, is a rapper who delves into subjects ranging from corporate corruption, to foreign war and the drug war. Whatever your opinion on conspiracy theories, Payday is more than talented and has a unique perspective on what’s going on behind the scenes. Best yet – he was a Ron Paul supporter, and who doesn’t like Ron Paul?

6.) Foolish Risk

Foolish Risk is a rapper, artist, and editor at the Facebook page Agoristball. Foolish Risk is also a host of the podcast The Philosopher WallHis raps range from anarcho-capitalist theory to philosophy. If you like music that makes you think, Foolish Risk is definitely for you.

5.) Jordon Page

Jordon Page is a “liberty rocker” who’s performed at festivals all around the country and has even had his work featured in videos by the popular YouTuber Adam Kokesh. In 2012, Page was an avid supporter of Ron Paul, and even had a “Ron Paul 2012” sticker on his guitar for the duration of Paul’s campaign.

4.) J3443ONE

Jerry is a self-described “conscious rapper” from Portland, Maine. An ardent voluntaryist, Jerry releases a new track nearly every Sunday about Rothbardianism, ending the Fed, and smashing the state. If you’re undergoing the notorious 6 month transition from minarchism to anarchism, be careful when listening to Jerry; you might find yourself an an-cap by the end of a few tracks.

3.) BackWordz

It’s common knowledge TLR’s own Eric July has a band, and they’re just as good as his articles (that is to say, epic). BackWordz has a channel with thousands of views on YouTube, and you’ll inevitably find yourself wishing they had more than four songs on it. Still, if you’re a libertarian metalhead, this band is a must-hear.

2.) Porter Robinson

A style as ambitious and rebellious as dubstep is a perfect recipe for libertarian themes, and Porter Robinson captures this beautifully. It’s rare for a musician as popular as Robinson to be open about their political views, but in his song The State, he actually samples an audio track of Murray Rothbard’s For a New Liberty. Needless to say, it’s a great listen for libertarian ravers everywhere.

1.) Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa may have described himself as a “practical conservative”, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a “small l” libertarian in many ways. In fact, he was very critical of the conservatives of the Reagan administration, stating in an interview:

“The biggest threat to America today is not communism, it’s moving America toward a fascist theocracy. And everything that’s happened during the Reagan administration is steering us right down that pipe.”

Zappa was skeptical of authority and indoctrination, and was critical of the mainstream media. Perhaps it’s because the movement was in its infancy for much of Zappa’s life, but if he were alive today, it’s a reasonable assumption Zappa would have identified with many of the party’s views, if not identified with it completely.
