This Florida Town Might Make It Illegal To Back Into Your Driveway

A town in Florida is considering an ordinance which would fine car owners for backing into their driveways.

The city council of Jacksonville is considering a proposal which they claim is aimed at preventing blight by demanding that citizens’ cars clearly display their licenses and tags from the street. The proposal, which has been approved by two committees, would issue a $50 fine for people who back their cars into their own private property. Inspectors would drive around looking for citizens who aren’t in compliance and issue them tickets.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” said Dave Bryant. “The main reason I do it is people parallel park on the side of the street, so if you are backing out, you can’t see traffic coming.”

A proposal being considered says that if inspectors can’t see a vehicle’s tag from the road, the owner could be cited. That means vehicles wouldn’t be allowed to be covered up in a driveway, either.

Jacksonville claims that there is a problem with people leaving abandoned cars in their driveway, and that this is the best way to remedy the issue.

Councilman Warren Jones said: “We have been trying to find a way to address this problem because it’s a blight on the community and it’s driving down property values and it’s very unsightly. But our hands are tied as enforcement goes because we cannot enforce it unless we can see the tag.”

Cars with covers will also be cited. The covers would be required to be clean, and allow the tags to be visible from the street. If drivers want to back their cars into their own driveways they will be required to write the vehicle’s tag number and display it so that it can be seen from the street.

Kristyn Irwin said: “I can see where it could make it easier to find something if you needed to locate a vehicle for whatever reason, but I really like being able to park like that and not having to worry about backing into someone on the street.”
