The Right to Freedom for the Elderly

Aging has become a social problem in today’s society. There was a time when older people were revered for their gaining of wisdom throughout the years. However, in modern society, there is a different perspective of older adults by both regular people on the street and by policymakers.

These perceptions have influenced their decisions regarding the value, priorities, and resources given to various life cycle parts. Much of our understanding of the aging process is not shaped by data but by irrational perceptions, beliefs, and fears.

Many economic and social policies have shaped how we look at old age and help determine our behavior towards it. One example of this is the introduced policy for pensions that encouraged a fixed age exit from the work world based on age alone. Unfortunately, this created the fixed idea that a person at a certain age should be considered old no matter his abilities.

These policies have led to age discrimination in the wider society and employment environments. People above a certain age have a lot of difficulties finding a job, which has led to more economic dependence on the government. While many elderly enjoy their retirement years, others are struggling with the inability to cope and have no way of supplementing their government incomes financially.

Policies also separate the aged from the younger generation and place them into different categories as human beings. Many elderly people are segregated from the rest of society in their homes. This has widened the gap between younger and older people, which may have also paved the way for increased elder abuse.

Many elderly still have the physical and mental capabilities to function at the same level as younger individuals in society. However, many do not have the freedom to do so since they have been labeled as “old.” As a result, they are put in a position where they cannot contribute to the rest of society and may feel like they have become a burden.

There are a lot of areas of concern when it comes to the elderly and their rights to freedom. We should periodically examine policies to see how they can be updated. There is no magical age at which a person becomes old. Aging is a personal experience, and the freedoms that go along with it should be personalized as well.

The perception of elder abuse as a social problem is quite new. The practice involves causing harm to an older person, and while it has been an ongoing issue for years, it has just been recently recognized as a problem that needs to be fixed. But, unfortunately, adult abuse is real, and in many cases, the elderly find that they can’t use their voices to speak up against it.

This is a situation that society needs to look at as a whole to save those suffering now and the younger generation that will suffer in the future if nothing is done to stop it. If you feel that your rights and freedoms have been violated, it’s time to consult with an elder abuse attorney. It’s time for the silence to be broken on this ongoing problem.
