There are many different kinds of voting fraud. Most of the time, fraud in the process of voting is labeled as “Voter Fraud,” as if the voters were responsible for any error that occurs. But this week in Texas, as many early voters cast their ballot, they suspected a different kind of fraud. Even though they selected straight-ticket Republican, the electronic ballot indicated a presidential vote for Clinton/Kaine.

Lisa Houlette of Canyon, Texas voted straight-ticket Republican on Monday, October 24, only to find that the Clinton/Kaine box was highlighted on her voting machine. She was vigilant and asked for help to change it back. It took the assistance of two election workers to allow her to change her vote back to what she had selected.

Others reported similar experiences. In a press release issued on October 26, 2016, Nancy Tanner, County Judge of Potter County, explained that that the machines were checked and there was nothing wrong with them.

“There is nothing wrong with any of the machines we use for voting,” Judge Tanner wrote. “They do not flip your vote. They do not flip parties. Only humans do that.” She also told her constituency that it is not possible to request a paper ballot.

Even if the incidents reported occur as a result of human error in using the voting machines, the experience of those voters who had their votes flipped was that they were vigilant, and it took great effort to correct the error once it occurred. If this is a mistake that is so very easy to make and so difficult to fix, then it may be that there is something wrong with the machines after all. To date, there has been no report that a Texas voter who selected straight-ticket Democrat had his or her vote flipped to Republican.

It has already been reported in the news that according to the polls, Texas may be highly competitive. Accordingly, any small number of votes could make a big difference.

The accuracy of the election process is very important to all of us, and not just those in the Republican Party who support Donald Trump. For Libertarians, it matters very much that neither Clinton nor Trump win by a landslide, and that to the extent that the voters are divided, that each vote be counted correctly. If neither the Republican nor the Democrat receives 270 electoral votes, then the election would be thrown into the House of Representatives. In view of this, we should all be vigilant to help our fellow citizens to get their votes tallied accurately, even if we do not want the person they are voting for to be elected.
