NBC’s hit comedy Parks and Recreation has had an enormous cultural impact in its six seasons. Viewers have been treated to delightful performances from its cast of comedians such as Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman and many others.

It features the story of a plucky government employee Leslie Knope, whose boss is the epitome of mustachioed libertarian greatness. Ron Swanson.

Swanson hates government and believes that it should be as small as possible. Because of this, he strives to make the Parks and Rec department as ineffective as possible. He even goes out of his way to hire people who suck at their jobs! Despite this curmudgeonly attitude, Swanson is a great boss and truly cares for the people around him.

One of his greatest moments was the time he took everyone camping and told everyone a ghost story: “And when she looked in the back of her car… she saw…. that even though it was her own private property…. she would be forced to take it in…. FOR A STATE INSPECTION!”

Terrifying!

In the clip below, Ron takes the opportunity to teach a schoolgirl about the proper role of government, or why it matters. At first he’s reluctant, but once he learns what her assignment is about, he jumps at the chance to teach her why “government is a greedy piglet that suckles at the taxpayer’s teat until he has sore, chapped nipples”. Hopefully this will help parents who have been looking for tips on how to instruct their child on a little Freedom 101. Enjoy!
