Former GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah said taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook to fund security clearances for former government officials, Tuesday on “Fox & Friends.”
“Really what should happen is by default they shouldn’t have a security clearance,” Chaffetz said.
“And it costs. What I’ve been told it costs every three or four years, after you leave the government if you have to have it renewed it costs something like $15,000. Why should the American taxpayers have to pay that amount of money? And it’s just not one or two people.”
Chaffetz said the president’s power to strip officials of security clearance is “unilateral” and above reproach and recommended a commission to determine a long-term solution.
“There are lots of people that have to go through this process. The president has unilateral authority to do this,” he concluded.
“It’s a joke to think that Brennan was going to sue them. And really what the president should do with Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell, they should do what Patrick Moynihan, the senator from New York, did 27 years ago — review the whole process in a bipartisan way. Appoint a commission. Fund it and then come up with a bipartisan solution.”
