Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School, an Albuquerque high school committed to developing “highly-skilled, socially-responsible learning activists” has generated controversy among students and outsiders alike for its upcoming prom theme.

Dubbed “prom-munism,” Cottonwood’s senior students voted on a communist prom theme to finish off their high school careers. While some students have chalked the decision up to “jokesters” who are “really intense with politics,” others who wished to remain anonymous felt the theme proved “a very powerful and destructive idea” and is “inappropriate.”

Speaking to KRQE News 13, Cottonwood’s executive director Sam Obenshain said,

Our students are in the International Baccalaureate program, so they are very academically focused. One of the classes they enjoy the most is a world history class… We want to make sure we honor the students’ voices but at the same time we use this as a learning experience for them.”

Perhaps that learning experience will include the horrific death toll committed under communist regimes throughout history.

No word yet on how the theme will come to fruition, but perhaps it will include handout copies of The Communist Manifesto and the bodies of victims hanging from the ceiling.

Communism: doesn’t it sound like a party?
