A student group at George Mason University has sued its school to discover links between the school and the Charles Koch Foundation.

The lawsuit, which also includes GMU’s fundraising department, is filed by Transparent GMU, a group that is concerned about private donors affecting the content of education received by students.

Transparent GMU filed the suit after their Freedom of Information Act request was denied by GMU and the fundraising department, GMU Foundation.

“It’s disappointing to see the [GMU] Foundation turn away students who are justifiably concerned about donor influence at their university—especially when Virginia’s open records law is so clear,” said Evan Johns, an attorney for Appalachian Mountain Advocates, the law firm with which Transparent GMU is working. “The law simply does not allow a public university to conceal its records by outsourcing its public business to a private company.”
