“Statism” by Backwordz is a Song You Need to Hear

Backwordz is taking us on a journey from a place of anger to a message of hope and enlightenment: overthrow the state by empowering yourself.

Rare is the man who can face down a mob and tell them what they do not want to hear: someone who hopes to put a word in the rabble’s collective ear and shake them of their fear, ignorance, and worn-out ways of thinking.

Eric July, the leader of the hip-hop/metal band Backwordz, is such a man, but he has more than just a word or two for the crowd. He has a whole flow of words, vision and message, ready to serve as a much-needed slap to the face of “the people.”

What is this message? Well, as Eric says on the latest track from Backwordz just released on Loudwire, “we’re going to cut to the chase and get rid of metaphorical nonsense.”

The track is called “Statism.” It is the second single off of Backwordz forthcoming album debut “Veracity,” and Mr. July not only cuts to the chase; he cuts to the bone and guts the violent illusion that is the state.

“They rob, kill, and steal by the day,” July says on the track, “I’d be a buffoon to trust the state.”

However, July doesn’t just rail against the state and its agents. His words are not directed at the government, but the masses. His words are meant for you, the average voter. He thinks it’s past time you changed your state of mind and took responsibility for your own life rather than turning to the false “savior” that is the state.

As sung by the guest star on the track, Craig Mabbit of Escape the Fate, the most powerful line of the song is:

Open Your Eyes

The state you’re in, is a state of mind.

Freedom disguised, the state you’re in is a state of mind

Overall, the music on track meshes perfectly with the hard-hitting lyrics. Heavy rhythmic guitars rise and fall with a relentless drum beat for the verses only to transition into an anthemic climb for the hook. The anthem then reaches its pinnacle with liberating effect once Mabbit starts singing “open your eyes.”

Backwordz is taking us on a journey here from a place of angst and anger to a message of hope and enlightenment. Overthrow the state by empowering yourself. Let the state die a quiet death, put down by the peaceful changing of our minds to superior ideas.

As the song says, “You can be free or be a slave, but you can’t be both.”

The choice is yours.
