Sick Kids in Florida Waiting Over Two Years For Promised Medical Marijuana Oil

In 2014 the Florida Legislature passed what is known in the medical cannabis community as a “CBD-only law.” This law was aimed at helping sick children; two years later, those sick kids are still waiting.

CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of several dozen cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It gained some measure of fame through the “Weed” documentary series on CNN that is hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta. In the series, Dr. Gupta shows the amazing healing power CBD has when administered to children who suffer from debilitating seizures.

In response to the popularity of the series, several states passed CBD-only laws, meaning the only type of medical marijuana allowed is made from just one cannabinoid (CBD) and not all of them. You know, for the kids.

Florida was one of those states and 2 years down the line, the medicine is still not available.

“We passed a law to respond to concerns from suffering families and we look up here a couple years later and we still do not have the relief promised to those families,” State Senator Rob Bradley said during a recent hearing of the legislature’s Regulated Industries Committee. “I find that particularly frustrating and I am sorry to those families that we are not there yet.”

Not as sorry as the parents who have to watch their children suffer dozens and sometimes hundreds of seizures a day until they die, I’m sure.

The worst part about the legalization of marijuana is that the government has to be involved in it. They prohibited cannabis in the first place (both the federal government and state governments) and in this day and age there is no way it gets legalized unless the government (federal and state) is heavily involved.

In the end, how hard is it for the state to allow sick kids access to an oil made from cannabis that doesn’t even get you high (the cannabinoid THC does that)? Apparently it is very hard indeed.
