State lawmakers and lobbyists in Missouri would have to disclose sexual relations with each other as “gifts” if a new bill in the state’s House of Representatives passes.
The bill, introduced by Montgomery County Republican Bart Korman, would require full disclosure of sexual relationships between lawmakers, lobbyists and their respective staff to the Missouri Ethics Commission, as all “gifts” have to be.
Lawmakers and lobbyists who are married to each other or entered a relationship prior to the registration of the lobbyist would not have to disclose their sexual encounters with one another.
The Missouri House of Representatives opened its 2016 legislative session Wednesday with a focus on legislative ethics laws. Two lawmakers resigned in 2015 after “scandals involving interns,” according to The Kansas City Star.
An excerpt from the bill reads:
The term ‘gift’ shall include sexual relations between a registered lobbyist and a member of the general assembly or his or her staff. Relations between married persons or between persons who entered into a relationship prior to the registration of the lobbyist, the election of the member to the general assembly, or the employment of the staff person shall not be reportable under this subdivision. The reporting of sexual relations for purposes of this subdivision shall not require a dollar valuation.
