Senators Cruz and Graham Team Up to Defund UN

Senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz, both Republicans, have introduced a bill to withhold US financial support of the United Nations in response to the US’ failure to veto the UN Security Counsel’s Resolution 2334.

The resolution declared that Israeli settlements in territories occupied since 1967 as illegal, and is generally viewed as a resolution to halt Israeli expansion into Palestinian areas, which has been ongoing for nearly fifty years. The resolution was adopted last month.

In the UNSC, five countries have veto power: China, France, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. The US abstained from the vote, while the other members with veto powers voted for the resolution.

In explaining the rationale for defunding the UN, Cruz stated, “The Obama administration has struck out repeatedly at Israel and has done real damage.”

Cruz and Graham both interpret the UN resolution as a means to delegitimize Israeli control over Jewish holy sites in Jerusalem. Their bill aims to end US taxpayer funding of the UN “unless and until they reverse this resolution.”
