Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York caused a ruckus at a swanky Manhattan restaurant after he began screaming at a wealthy patron for voting for President Donald Trump.
Schumer was dining at the Upper East Side restaurant Sette Mezzo on Sunday evening, The New York Post reports.
The senator saw that former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Joseph A. Califano Jr. and his wife Hillary were dining at Mezzo that night as well. Schumer approached the couple and reportedly became enraged after discovering that Hilary had voted for Trump.
A witness of the exchange reports that Schumer made it a public spectacle, shouting, “she voted for Trump!” The couple reportedly tried to leave the restaurant after being publicly harassed by the senator, but Schumer followed them outside, continuing his provocations on the sidewalk.
“How could you vote for Trump? He’s a liar!…He’s a liar,” Schumer yelled.
Another witness tells a different version of the story, where the Califanos actually approach Schumer’s table. The witness described the conversation as pleasant, friendly, and continued outside only because both parties left at the same time.
Schumer has taken a hard-line against the president in his first three months in office on everything from health care reform to cabinet appointments. The senator is among those Democrats calling for the filibuster of Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court.
