Saudi Arabia Seemingly Threatens 9/11-Style Attack Against Canada Over Women’s Rights Dispute

Joshua Gill

Saudi Arabia’s state media tweeted an infographic that seemingly threatened a 9/11-style attack against Canada over condemnation of Saudi Arabia’s imprisonment of women’s rights activists.

The infographic, which Infographic KSA deleted shortly after tweeting, depicted an Air Canada passenger jet heading toward the Toronto skyline at low altitude. The picture also featured text reading “Sticking one’s nose where it doesn’t belong! As the Arabic saying goes: ‘He who interferes with what doesn’t concern him finds what doesn’t please him.’”

The 9/11-style imagery seemed to be an overt threat especially in light of the fact that 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were Saudi citizens and the fact that Osama bin Laden, who organized the attack, has a surviving son in Saudi Arabia who reportedly desires vengeance for his father’s death.

The threatening infographic came as a response to the Canadian Foreign Ministry’s condemnation of the imprisonment of those who protest for and promote women’s rights for Saudis. “We urge the Saudi authorities to immediately release them and all other peaceful #humanrights activists,” the Canadian Foreign Ministry tweeted Friday, according to the Daily Mail. Canada’s criticism referenced the arrest of at least 12 prominent women’s rights activists in Saudi Arabia in the month of June.

Saudi Arabia responded by expelling the Canadian ambassador and announcing “the freezing of all new trade and investment transactions between the KSA and Canada.”

Infographic KSA uploaded another version of its picture after deleting the first tweet, this time without the plane, but has since deleted its entire Twitter account.
