Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s political career has hit a new low — Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders doesn’t even want his support.
The 2016 presidential hopeful, who endorsed Emanuel’s opponent Jesus “Chuy” Garcia during a surprising close runoff race in April, had no qualms about coming out against the Chicago Democrat during a Q&A with reportersat a campaign stop discussing criminal justice reform in the Windy City Wednesday.
“If the question is do I want or need Rahm Emanuel’s support for president, with all due respect for the mayor, no I don’t,” the 2016 hopeful said.
Sanders went on to say he doesn’t believe the mayor’s ideas align with his vision on issues.
The Washington Post reports Sanders had nearly 25 campaign surrogates at the event in addition to Garcia, including Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s and Rapper Killer Mike.
Emanuel has come under scrutiny over a scandal involving dashboard videos of a 2014 police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, which wasn’t released until after his mayoral race.
Emanuel’s approval rating has tanked to just 18 percent.
Earlier this month, Sanders called on any politician, including Emanuel, that knew the video was being withheld from the public to step down.
The Department of Justice is currently looking into the case.
