Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan slammed Democrats for insinuating that President-elect Donald Trump’s win is illegitimate Thursday.
“Let me say a couple of things. First of all — and I think this is what the president-elect is legitimately upset about,” Ryan said during his weekly press conference. “There are attempts on the left to delegitimize this election. That’s just bogus. He won fair and square.”
Russia attempted to meddle in the election, Ryan acknowledged, but former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is responsible for her own loss, the House speaker concluded.
“Russia didn’t tell Hillary Clinton not to go to Wisconsin or Michigan. They didn’t put the server in her basement or put the emails on Anthony Weiner’s laptop,” Ryan said. “He won the election fair and square.
Reiterating that Republicans do not condone foreign actors tampering with the political system of the United States, Ryan conceded that strides need to be taken to prevent future instances of foreign tampering.
“But let’s just put this into proper perspective and that is let’s deny those who arae trying to delegitimize a presidency before it starts while doing what we need to do making sure going forward that outside actors don’t interfere in our electoral system,” he said.
