Republicans, Maybe You Didn’t Hear Us Tell Democrats, “You Aren’t Taking Our Due Process Rights!”

The votes to shoot down Democratic gun control measures were barley counted when Republicans came out with their own bill stripping Americans of gun rights without due process. Republican lawmakers assure us the new bill will allow Americans due process after-the-fact as a means to restore their rights — but the Democrat’s bill had the same provisions.

Both bills strip Americans of their rights preemptively, without charge or trial. People on a watch list are presumed guilty until proven innocent. The right scoffed at such a proposal from the left, but at the same time some Republicans (including Donald Trump) were giving lip service to the idea that individuals on a government watch list shouldn’t be able to buy guns.

Maine Senator Susan Collins has announced a bi-partisan gun control bill that contains nearly every awful provision of the bill Republicans just celebrated defeating. Always eager to take your rights, Senator Lindsey Graham said, “If we can’t pass this, it truly is a broken system up here.”

No, Senator Graham, the system is broken because Americans keep electing people like you who have to regard for human rights or their oath of office. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not endorsed the legislation but has agreed to give it a vote.

Bi-partisanship in Washington usually means Americans are getting screwed.

Republicans also scheduled a vote this week to expand the FBI’s powers to spy on all Americans without a warrant — another blatant violation of due process. I suppose the GOP is no longer the party of the Rule of Law or limited government. In all honesty, they haven’t been in some time. While solid liberty-minded Republicans try to battle for the heart and soul of the party, the leadership continues to make moves to undermine Americans’ basic rights.
