Rep. Peter King: “It was madness to follow Ted Cruz” (VIDEO)

Representative Peter King (R-NY) appeared on CNN, wringing his hands in agony over the government shutdown, blaming it on Ted Cruz (R-TX) and limited government Republicans.

“I’ve said all along, this is madness — it was madness to follow Ted Cruz,” King said. “It was absolute madness to say we want to shut down the government, to defund Obamacare. It never made sense and now all we’re down to, apparently, is trying to pass a [continued resolution] to take away healthcare from congressional employees. That’s what we shut down the government for. It makes no sense.”

King is freaking out over the grassroots Tea Party and libertarian groups that have risen against him and other big government Republicans. Prominent organizations such as FreedomWorks, Heritage Action and Red State all opposed the plan that Democrats proposed for reopening government.

“This party is going nuts,” King told HuffPost. “So many people I run into who are normal people — and I hate to use that term — they just can’t understand what’s going on. “Even if this bill passed tonight, what would it have done?” he said. “After shutting down the government for two and a half weeks, laying off 800,000 people, all the damage we caused, all we would end up doing was taking away health insurance from congressional employees. That’s it? That’s what you go to war for? That’s what we shut down the United States government for?”
