Rand Paul Says Donald Trump is “Gollum”

By Lina Bryce

In his Facebook post, Paul explains the intention of the founding fathers to have a limited and restrained executive, which was to retain the power of the people. He stated that electing “Gollum” from The Lord of the Rings would be wrong and that “it shouldn’t be about who can grasp the ring,” a statement likely aimed at those in the party who feel seizing control of government without regard for principle would be enough.
Rand wrote:
They wrote the constitution to restrain the accumulation of power by the government. Trump is ignorant of this tradition, or worse yet, he is overtly opposed to the limited government tradition. This race should be about which candidate will best protect you from an overbearing government.
This race should not be about who can grasp the ring. Electing Gollum should not be our objective. This race should be about which candidate will best protect you from an overbearing government.
The primary race has been a turbulent one for Rand from the start. Although there is no doubt that his staunch supporters will stick by his side to the bitter end, it is still unclear if Paul’s message is resonating with undecided voters. Despite all this, he has yet to waiver from his principles and is the last man standing on the Republican stage, as far as those who advocate for a limited government.
“I am the only one on this national stage who really doesn’t want power or dominion over you,” he concluded. “I want to set you free, I want to leave you alone, and I want a government so small you can barely see it.”
Only once the voting commences will we know for sure which direction the GOP will take. Perhaps looking to The Lord of the Rings once more could offer some sage advise to those who do not see principles winning over Trump: “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.”
