Rand Paul: Democratic States Are The Most Unequal

Rand Paul had a great night during this week’s debate. He successfully challenged Republican rivals, Trump and Rubio. He also got more speaking time. But perhaps most importantly, he exposed the income inequality myth for the world to see.

Moderator Gerard Baker, editor in chief of the Wall Street Journal, asked Sen. Paul: “Does it matter at all that the gap between the rich and everyone else is widening?”

Rand Paul answered the question with the cold hard facts:

“I think that we ought to look where income inequality seems to be the worst. It seems to be worst in cities run by Democrats, … states run by Democrats and countries currently run by Democrats,” he said.

The Gini coefficient is a scientific measure that ranks the income inequality in a place on a scale from zero — no inequality — to 1, the maximum level of inequality. The Washington Post utilized the Census Bureau to examine Paul’s claim.

The three states that scored the worse on income inequality are D.C., New York and Connecticut, all undeniably blue. And the least unequal, Utah, Wyoming and Alaska — are all red. Almost every state follows this trend, democratic states have more income inequality.

Rand Paul’s point was spot on and factually accurate. Paul hit a home run on the income inequality myth and knocked it out of the park.

“[T]he bottom line is, if you want less income inequality, move to a city with a Republican mayor or a state with a Republican governor,” Paul said to applause.
