Rand Paul calls out Jeb Bush’s Hypocrisy on Marijuana

Senator Rand Paul stood alone on the CNN presidential debate as the most libertarian of all the Republicans. Paul’s stance on the war on drugs is based on the 10th amendment interpretation that these issues should be handled at the state level.

Paul called out Jeb Bush without naming him by name, saying that at least one person on the stage had smoked it before and because of his privilege he didn’t go to jail.

“There’s at least one prominent example on the stage of someone who says they smoked pot in high school,” Paul said. “And yet the people who are going to jail for this are poor people, often African Americans, and often Hispanics. And yet the rich kids who used drugs aren’t.”

Paul said he thought marijuana use was “a crime where the only victim is the individual” and said he’d like to see “more rehabilitation and less incarceration.”

Jeb Bush then revealed himself as the high school pot user Paul was referring to.

“So 40 years ago I smoked marijuana. And I admit it,” Bush said. “I’m sure that other people might have done it and might not want to say it in front of 25 million people. My mom’s not happy I just did.”

Bush went on to address drug usage as a “serious problem” and pointed to the heroine epidemic in New England as evidence.

“It is appropriate for the government to play a consistent role, to be able to provide more treatment, more prevention,” Bush said.
