Racists Push Star Wars VII Boycott Because of “White Genocide”

On Monday afternoon #BoycottStarWarsVII hit the top of Twitter’s trending topics. With the new film on the horizon its not out of the ordinary to see discussions regarding the film trending on social media, but the reasoning behind the call for this boycott is an ugly one.

Racism is the root reason behind this call to arms. To be specific, the driving reason behind #BoycottStarWarsVII is that the people who started it are upset that multiple people of color are featured in the main cast. Something that they claim is evidence of “white genocide” in the Star Wars universe. They take it a step further and call J.J. Abrams a “white-hating Hollywood Jew.” It’s pathetic.

This whole thing was concocted by two twitter users on Sunday night: @DarklyEnlighten (“Lord Humungus”) and @genophilia (“End Cultural Marxism”). These two are responsible for the majority of what is going on. Both of them intentionally tried to get the topic trending, and overnight a few other users took up the cause and began tweeting the hashtag along with other racist sentiments. They basically flooded twitter with racist tweets accompanied by the hashtag until others noticed and ran with it.

By morning it was begining to take off and by mid-day it landed on the trending topics. Once it hit trending topics it turned into a wildfire. Most of the people tweeting #BoycottStarWarsVII are doing so in disbelief or in anger against the people perpetrating the racism. The problem is, this is exactly what they want. They are trolling the public, and the public took the bait. With every re-tweet, with every angry message they send with #BoycottStarWarsVII in it, the internet trolls get some kind of satisfaction.

For this to go away, people shouldn’t respond. By adding fuel to the fire the users who want to spout racist remarks win. They will continue to make messed up tweets as long as they think someone is listening and they are getting attention.
