Rabbis accused of torturing, kidnapping husbands to attain wives divorces

Two Orthodox rabbis are being accused of plotting the kidnapping and beatings of Jewish men so that they would grant religious divorces to their wives.

Rabbis Mendel Epstein and Martin Wolmark were busted by the FBI in an undercover sting operation that had an agent posing as a woman who wanted out of her marriage. In Orthodox Judaism, only men may initiate divorce proceedings.

The two rabbis bragged that they did this regularly, they used cattle prods and suffocated men’s heads in plastic bags. They would take men to warehouses and torture them in order to secure the divorce. Their services weren’t cheap either.

The rabbis reportedly were charging $10,000 for the kidnapping and $50-60k for a “tough guy”. The two men are being held in Trenton, New Jersey on federal charges including plotting to kidnap, abduct, hold for ransom and threatening to coerce a man to conduct a divorce.
