Police Find Confederate Statue’s ‘Hands’ Cut Off

A century-old Confederate statue had its “hands” cut off and its rifle removed in act of vandalism that may cost approximately $200,000 to fix.

The Georgia statue, located in the Myrtle Hill Cemetery, had to be taken down from its pedestal in light of the damages to it, ABC News reported Tuesday.

Despite the gate to the statue being locked, vandals were still able to “surgically cut” the hands, take away the rifle, and smash the statue’s face.

“It looked like it was surgically cut,” said Rome City Manager Sammy Rich. “It’s just super disappointing that somebody would go to that much trouble to get up there, put a ladder up or whatever to reach it.”

Officials are currently investigating the damage and and Rich is trying to see what can be done to restore the statue to its original self.

“It has been reported, the damage has been estimated and, yes, [we] are investigating,” Rome Police Department Lt. Danny Story told ABC News.

Other Confederate statues and other monuments in various states have also been defaced as more and more people call for the statues to be taken down. A group of people were caught throwing red paint on a statue of Francis Scott Key and writing “racist anthem” at the base of it.
