Florida Planned Parenthoods will now offer Transgender Hormone Therapy

Planned Parenthoods in Florida will begin offering hormone replacement therapy to transgender people starting in October.

A total of 11 clinics in the southwest and central Florida area will start providing a variety of health care services for transgender people, reports the Naples News.

“We feel adding Hormone Replacement Therapy to our list of high-quality care services is really core to our mission,” spokeswoman Anna Eskamani said.

A person who wants to transition must sit down for an appointment before receiving the hormones. The patient either has to be over 18 years old, or have written permission from their parent or guardian.

“You’ll be able to ask questions, have a physical done, have lab work done, make sure you’re in good health and good spirits,” Eskamani said.

The treatments will not be covered by federal dollars. Instead, the treatments will either be covered by insurance or paid for out of pocket, according to Eskamani.

“At Planned Parenthood we accept all major forms of insurance and we also keep costs low for people paying out of pocket. We look for ways to reduce financial barriers that exist for our patients,” she said.

It is not clear how Planned Parenthood will keep costs low for their patients. The organization received $528 million from the government in 2013-2014.

A leader in the Florida Family Council, a pro-life and pro-family organization, expressed concern with the clinics offering hormone therapy.

“A lot of schools are promoting gender diversity — not just allowing it but promoting it — and I can see Planned Parenthood trying to market and target to children in those schools. That would be a big concern of mine,” John Stemberger, from the Florida Family Council, said, according to Fox35.
