The duty to guard the tomb falls to the Sentinels — a volunteer position — with an acceptance rate of 20 percent. In times of extreme inclement weather, they can take refuge in a duty hut called the “trophy room” overlooking the tomb — but we bet they’ll remain on the march.

A dusting of snow Wednesday evening shut down much of D.C., leading to hours-long commutes home that reached into the double-digits. The Sentinels have continuously guarded the tomb since 1948.
