Gunfire rang out in West Philadelphia, PA when an individual identified as Nicholas Glenn shot seven people, including two police officers. The attack began at approximately 11:20PM Friday when Glenn opened fire on Sgt. Sylvia Young, a 19-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. Sgt. Young was shot eight times by the suspect. It has been stated by the Philadelphia PD that Sgt. Young was saved by her body armor.
After ambushing Sgt. Young, Glenn then opened fire into a bar, wounding a security guard. The shooter then attacked two occupants of a nearby car. A female occupant was killed and a male occupant remains in critical condition.
Glenn then proceeded to engage in a firefight with law enforcement officers, at one point using a female bystander as a human shield. The shooter wounded a University of Pennsylvania police officer in this engagement. The officer was identified as Ofc. Eddie Miller. Glenn was subsequently killed by responding officers.
The shooter, Nicholas Glenn, had an extensive criminal record with at least sixteen prior arrests. Glenn was armed with a Ruger pistol with the serial numbers scratched off. This is very common with stolen weapons, and they are commonly used and sold by street gangs.
A note found on Glenn’s body gives little insight into his motivation. The note, which has not yet been released in full, has been described as rambling and scatter-brained. In the note, Glenn expresses a deep hatred of Law Enforcement and an individual parole officer in particular. It is currently unknown whether this attack was purely personal or motivated by a deeper ideology.
This shooting comes on the heels of another ambush attack in Philadelphia which occurred earlier this year when a man who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State ambushed a police officer who was sitting in his patrol vehicle.
