The animal rights activist group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), euthanized 1,411 cats and dogs last year, while only 57 were adopted.

The animals rights group euthanized 1,428 animals and transferred 482 to other shelters last year, according to a report by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS). Of the 2,007 animals acquired by PETA last year, the group only returned ten dogs and cats to their owners and successfully placed only 57 with adopting families.

On the other hand, PETA put down 557 dogs, 854 cats and 17 other companion animals.

The additional animals euthanized last year brought PETA’s death toll to over 36,000 since 1998. Most of the animals put down were processed at PETA’s headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia. PETA’s official blog states that killing dogs and cats, helps them “escape an uncaring world without trauma or pain.”

Last November, two PETA employees stole a family’s pet Chihuahua off their porch and ultimately euthanized the animal. The family captured video of this occurring on their home surveillance system. When caught, the PETA workers apologized by giving the family a fruit basket.

State law requires that animals be held for five days before they are euthanized to allow people to recover their animals in situations like this. An investigation by the VDACS found that PETA violated the law and imposed the largest fine it could, at $500.

PeTA uses a small ‘e’ in their acronym, for little ethics . . . They put it right there for all to see, but still people want to believe they care about animals. They don’t and in fact, they are proud to kill over 95% of the animals they take in.

      • Random Pendantic

Technically, according to the report, 71.151%…
And it would be nice to know reasons given in each euthanize case… But yeah, I agree with your sentiment.

  • IceTrey

    Good job.

  • Lucy_P

PETA is not a traditional animal shelter. They operate one small shelter—a shelter of last resort for animals who need euthanasia to end their suffering (many of whom have been rejected by “no-kill” shelters), including dogs who are aggressive and unadoptable because they have been kept chained their entire lives; feral cats dying of contagious diseases; animals who are wracked with cancer; elderly animals who have no quality of life and whose desperate guardians brought them to PETA because they can’t afford to pay a vet to euthanize them; and the list goes on. A painless end is a kindness for these animals, and the services PETA provides are vitally needed in an area where many people can’t afford to take their animals to a veterinarian.

    • Who, me?

    • Donna Covey

There’s nothing ethical about PETA. They’re a radical group that has done more harm than good for the welfare of animals.

    • MyKinKStar

Lucy, if you believe even half of what you posted, then you haven’t been paying attention.

    • I Can See You

you have bought their lame excuse, which has been rebutted soundly by witnesses. how many dogs would you allow your neighbor to steal and kill before you’d stop defending them?

    • Irene

No, Lucy. You are either deliberately lying or have been misled. If the latter is the case you can do some research and remedy the situation very quickly. But I suspect the former is the case and then I have no remedy for your cruel and twisted mind. Just understand, we are not using your bullshit

Amazing how similar the lies, the exaggerations, and the diverted to this over that excuses from PeTA reflect those of Planned Parenthood.

Neither one knows anything about ethics, honesty, or decency.

Says a man who has adopted a plethora of animals and children, and spends his weekends lecturing men and boys to keep their peckers in their pockets so as not to contribute to the abortion figures???

You are parroting PeTA’s propaganda. They are NOT a friend to you, your animals or anyone else’s animals..,
that the ONLY euthanized very sick, or unadoptable animals is a lie. Get a clue Lucy_P.., stop giving THEM money and donate to your local shelters. And to believe that no kill shelters would keep suffering animals alive is idiotic! To top it all off, look at what PETA, and HSUS etc. pay their CEO’S, other corporate officers and legal dept.., it’s no wonder they don’t have their own shelter!! They earn MILLIONS in donations and give none of it to shelters! They need the money for their death wagons that roam about euthanizing any animal they come across! They’ve put down whole litters of completely adoptable puppies rather than vaccinate them, and hand them over to a shelter with funds to care for them until they’re adopted. Smarten up do your homework!! PeTA is not your friend.

Lucy_P is the only with a clue on this comment. The rest of you are just clueless losers.

Andrew Follett (article author): 1411 killed in 2016. How does that compare to the total dogs and cats killed in all the kill shelters in the US in the same year? A drop in the bucket, right? SO, WHY ARE YOU REALLY AGAINST PETA? Us longtime supporters (MANY) know that it was PETA who first brought the issues in circuses, zoos, factory farms, and laboratories using animals to the American public. It was PETA who went in undercover and brought out the video, the proof, and educated us on what really goes on. It was PETA who fought tirelessly against Ringling Brothers circus for decades and bore the weight of various court-ordered fines in the process. But, Ringling Brothers is closing, as it should. Your argument against a huge, highly effective organization that has fought and won, over and over, for animal welfare in a variety of arenas, is weightless on the basis of this one detail. I love animals. I adopt. And, I would never, ever, take one to ANY shelter. However, your argument is insignificant in light of the bigger picture, which is REALITY. If you want to write, you need to get rid of you bias and your narrow lense.

These people are just whining losers.

  • Denise Inkel

PETA is disturbing a lot of BIG companies who torture and abuse animals, if they were not there who would defend them? You? It is easy to spread dust to put down their work, there is always two sides of a story. If you are really concern about animal rights, go to PETA and be a volunteer, you will see first hand what they do and let us know! Nobody is perfect maybe they screwed somewhere but still I prefer being on the side of those who denounce and defend instead of being on the side of abusers and torturers. There is no gray section in that matter it is black or white! The big disturbed companies are always reacting by marketing all sorts of stories about PETA to stop them but they will not stop! Animals are the victims of human sadistic activities and it must stop.

  • NancyRebecca Jordan

Animal activism and Animal Welfare are two different things. PETA knows activism, they don’t know the meaning of Animal Welfare. Know the difference!

  • Dave Jones

PETA has long been known as a manufacturer of evidence, they lie and cheat their way to a point. I don’t think they have ever operated totally above board in any of their dealings. The whole lot of the should be put out of business

  • SeriouslyWTF1

what do you think they should have done? Are the libertarians willing
to fund PETA so that they don’t have to kill any more animals?
Do you complain about garbage collectors because they haul so much garbage to the dump?
Do you complain about doctors because they keep finding and removing cancer?
Get a life losers and actually contribute to society for a change.

  • Mimi Bauer

I do not condone peta’s logic in euthing pets…but they are fighting for animal rights and making progress…again, killing them is not the answer but peta does not believe in having pets…as in having animal companions,,,they believe an animal is better off dead then to be rehomed or kept by humans…they are not in the business of rescue…this is not their forte…animal rights such as the wearing of fur and such is their thing…never ever call peta to shelter a pet…they simply will save it a life of misery (their thinking, not mine) by euthanizing…the aspca and hsus fall into the rehomeing/recue category…as well as any local no kill shelter…animal rights is a complicated subject and there are a lot of half truths and misinformation all over the place…peta has its place in defending animals…just don’t count on them as a shelter or rescue…their philosophy is clouded in that regard
