Open Letter to Republicans from a Concerned Father

Open Letter to  Colorado Republicans from a Concerned Father

By Dallas Brooks

I’m a dad.  It’s my number one priority in life, along with being a husband.  I have four daughters of my own, and I wouldn’t let them anywhere near a man like Donald Trump.  I have three sons, and I wouldn’t want them to hear the kind of vulgarity that comes from the Republican candidate’s mouth behind closed doors because I am raising them to be good men.  Granny used to say, “You are the company you keep.”  That’s pretty damn good advice when you think about it.  If you surround yourself with people who are miserable, can you help but feel a little bit down?  If you are ambitious and you’d like to succeed at something, you want to be around like-minded people, don’t you?  Coloradans, would you want to spend a Sunday afternoon with a room full of Raiders fans?  Of course not!

We thought we knew the real Donald Trump.  He’s the guy who viciously attacks everyone who disagrees with him, calls for looking into past sex tapes of his detractors, calls women fat pigs, favors using deadly government force to evict little old ladies from their homes who pay their bills and their taxes on time, and makes fun of a Vietnam veteran war hero for being captured.  Yesterday’s bombshell recording from a decade ago shows the man for what he really is…a predator.  The blowhard billionaire thinks he can sexually assault married women because he’s famous, and he was caught dead to rights stating so unequivocally.

You are the company you keep, Republicans.  It looks like many in the GOP are jumping ship, and for good reason.  On July 4, 2016, the Colorado Republican candidate for the US Senate, Darryl Glenn, said “I proudly stand with Donald Trump.”  At the time, during a Republican primary campaign, it was understandable to support the party to some degree.  Last night, however, after the revelations about Donald Trump’s true character, Darryl Glenn stated his disappointment, and then said he still supports Trump’s presidential run.

Mr. Glenn, reversed course this morning, and he’s no longer supporting Donald Trump’s candidacy.  Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO) has seen the light, and he’s called for Trump to be removed from the Republican ticket.  Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) has called for Trump to step aside and hand the nomination to Mike Pence.

In Colorado’s Senate race, Mr. Glenn has avoided debates like the Democratic incumbent, while the Libertarian has fought tooth and nail to be included, despite the best efforts to keep her from the public eye.  He was, until this morning, a Trump enabler, and I think the state can do better when it comes to electing our next Senator.  Republicans, it’s time to put principles over party, especially in the presidential and senate races.

If the decision for president really did come down to a womanizing loudmouth and a corrupt socialist, I could understand your hesitation.  After all, Donald Trump’s statements about women put him firmly in the Bill Clinton school of sexual deviance.  Since Hillary Clinton also put partisan affiliation and career ambition over principles in attacking the victims of Bill’s numerous escapades and alleged violent crimes, she is not a better choice.  I understand your hesitance about checking the Libertarian ticket for president in November, but if you want a principled leader who will admit mistakes, learn from them, never raise taxes, and support a strong military while bringing more of our fighting men and women home, then Gary Johnson is the best choice.  Mr. Glenn is an experienced politician who should know this.

Coloradans, it’s time to learn that same lesson here.  Lily Tang Williams has proven she will fight for your Constitutional rights, while Darryl Glenn has faltered as a campaigner.  Just as it’s time for Mr. Trump to step aside, Mr. Glenn should do the same.  He’s definitely no Donald Trump, but he lacked the conviction to stand on his own and proclaim that the nominee of the Republican party should go back home and no longer attempt to represent the interests of Conservative Americans.  Instead, he waited until the other big names in the party began to voice their concern.  He flip-flopped on this issue within 12 hours.

Mr. Glenn, by staying in this race, you’re helping to almost guarantee a Bennet re-election, and that’s the worst possible outcome.  You and I both served this nation, and we both know the core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.  I believe you have your integrity, and I’m sure it eats you up inside to hear Trump say the things he does, knowing you have endorsed him even after this latest fiasco.  Donald Trump is done as a politician, as he should be.  I wish the same was true for Hillary Clinton, but so far we don’t have audio evidence of her misdeeds.  Now that you’ve reversed course on this endorsement of Trump, it’s time to support Lily Tang Williams, and look towards our 2018 gubernatorial race in Colorado where you will fare much better.

As a husband and a father, I will not stand by silently while the people who want to represent us, do nothing but represent their own self-interests.  I will vote to protect our freedoms and to avoid putting menacing people in positions of power.
