The Airborne and Special Operations Museum in North Carolina plans to honor elite K-9 warrior dogs on Memorial Day.

The honoring of these elite dogs through highlighting their bravery will take place on May 29 at the museum located in Fayetteville, N.C., The Fayetteville Observer reports.

“These truly daring and brave dogs often lead their soldier team-members in the most dire conditions to save lives and complete the mission,” Paul Galloway, executive director of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum Foundation, said in a statement. “They’ve given their lives for their country, and we are grateful to be able to honor them on this special day.”

The event will be held together with the Special Operations Forces K9 Memorial Foundation. Laura Miller, who works as vice president of the K9 Memorial Foundation, will read from the children’s book she authored: “How I Became a K9 Commando.” Miller served as an Army veterinary technician for 26 years.

The SOF K9 Memorial Foundation is comprised of a group of military and civilian professionals who have worked with K-9 dogs in the past. Currently, the group is trying to raise funds to place a permanent display at the museum of special operations handlers and their dogs.
