It Would Appear That The Media’s Hypocrisy Knows No Bounds

The Media’s Hypocrisy Knows No Bounds

by Dallas Brooks

“Hypocrite” is a term often used out of context in the duration of an ad hominem attack, yet it’s still one of the easiest and most effective tools to use in political debates.  Simply point out that your opponent is a flip-flopping liar who will say anything to get elected, and you get instant points.

Donald Trump recently suggested that Hillary Clinton’s Secret Service detail should quit carrying guns if she’s so opposed to gun rights for Americans. He said that we could “see what happens to her” if her guards turned in their weapons. Believe it or not, that’s a pretty reasonable hypothetical suggestion from the Republican candidate who isn’t known for “reasonable” suggestions on anything. The Democratic candidate is no friend of the Second Amendment, and she’s said so repeatedly. She favors mandatory gun registration, increasing the age requirements for purchasing guns, a ban on “assault” rifles, mandatory wait times for gun purchases, and increased background checks, just to name a few.

There’s something incredibly hypocritical about a woman who is protected around the clock by highly trained and armed Secret Service agents telling the average Joe who isn’t entitled to government-funded protection (and who can’t afford private security), that he shouldn’t be packing heat when walking through the dangerous city streets at night. Trump is absolutely correct to point out this hypocrisy.

The media immediately circled the wagons and ran with the story under headlines that suggested Trump’s statement was somehow a threat to their chosen one. Hillary’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, took the opportunity to be self-righteous and state that Trump was “inciting people to violence.” The vast majority of the media will run with this “threat” story for the next 48 hours or so because that’s what they do: they push a narrative instead of reporting the facts. Did it dawn on any of the so-called journalists covering the campaign that Clinton is, in fact, telling us to do as she says and not as she does? It seems the media is well-versed in hypocrisy, too.

The media’s failure to cover the real issue and Hillary’s positions on guns aren’t the only examples of hypocrisy in this story, however. Donald Trump, the former Democrat who donated money to Hillary Clinton’s campaign, said in his book The America We Deserve, that “I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.” It was hypocritical then for the billionaire with private security to support legislation that harms everyday Americans, and it’s doubly so for him now to criticize his opponent for supporting positions that he held as recently as 2000.
If you’ve had the opportunity to see the epic 1993 film Tombstone starring Kurt Russell (a staunch defender of Libertarian ideals in his own right) and Val Kilmer, you’re familiar with Doc’s famous deathbed line that would apply to the vast majority of the news media today: “It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.”
