Why are so many Americans in prison?

Reason TV has an interview about Michael Stoll‘s new book “Why are so many Americans in prison?”. The book takes a hard look at US incarceration rates, which have exploded in recent decades.

Tracy Oppenheimer interviewed Stoller about the costs of putting so many people in jail. New York City pays about $168,000 per inmate. California’s prison system is even more expensive.

“One of the things that I think needs to be done—and we know that this is politically difficult—is there has to be reform in sentencing,” says Stoll.
