The audio recording is disturbing: the terrified screams of a family in crisis, answered only by the cold voice of an automated voicemail system.
“If this is an emergency, hang up and dial 911,” the voice says as a Port Richey woman desperately cries out for help. “Thank you for calling…”
Finally, an operator answers the phone. “I shot one,” the caller reports.
The Florida man had just cut down one of the four armed robbers who had broken into his home and terrorized his family while the man waited for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office to answer the phone.
“You should somebody?” the operator asks. “Listen, did you shoot somebody?”
Officials say the transfer did not happen properly, but that the arrival of first responders was not delayed.
Nonetheless, as the saying goes: when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
