Majority Of Voters Either Didn’t Care, Or Supported Comey Firing

Voters largely aren’t sure where they stand on President Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, according to a Friday poll.
Morning Consult revealed that 35 percent of respondents supported Trump’s decision compared to 33 percent who asserted that Comey should have remained at his post. The remaining 32 percent didn’t have an opinion on the current president’s decision. That means that 67 percent of voters either supported Trump or didn’t care enough about the issue to form an opinion on the matter.
Those that did have an opinion were split largely along party lines. Sixty-two percent of Republicans supported the president’s decision, and only 10 percent of voters on the right said that Comey should have been allowed to stay at his post.
Fifty-eight percent of Democrats think that Trump should have left Comey in charge of the FBI, and only 16 percent of those on the left supported Comey’s ouster.
Additionally, 37 percent called the decision “appropriate,” and 34 percent said that firing the director was “inappropriate.”
Trump fired Comey Tuesday, declaring that people on both sides of the aisle had lost faith in the director.
“It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission,” Trump wrote in his letter to Comey on Tuesday.
Morning Consult surveyed 1,731 registered voters from May 9 through May 11. The poll carried a margin of error of 2 percentage point in either direction.
