Macron, Merkel Announce ‘Deep Revolution’ Plans For Europe

France and Germany announced deeper cooperation plans for the future Thursday, including a number of defense and security initiatives.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with their respective cabinets in Paris to discuss a number of projects. The countries will develop a new European fighter jet and agreed on a “project of fiscal convergence for enterprises.”

“I believe that we have shown shortly after the new government here was installed that we are ready to activate Franco-German relations with a new impetus,” Merkel said at a joint news conference following the meeting.

Macron took it a step further, calling their new relationship “a deep revolution.”

“Today there are too many European standards and qualifications and sometimes there is competition among Europeans internationally,” Macron said. “I can confirm this is a deep revolution, but we are not afraid when they are carried out peacefully, in a structured way and over time.”

Macron has even bigger plans in mind after Germany’s general election in September, when Merkel looks set to secure a fourth term in office. He wants a common budget for countries in the eurozone and a finance minister for the countries that share the euro.

“I have nothing against a eurozone budget [and] we can talk about creating a European finance minister,” Merkel said.

Merkel and Macron have both previously urged the EU to take a more leading role in the world since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump.
