The Point Foundation will open a community college scholarship for LGBTQ students starting March 1, 2017.

As detailed on the foundation’s website, applicants for Point scholarships “must be ‘out’ as a person who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.”

“Point Foundation empowers promising lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential – despite the obstacles often put before them – to make a significant impact on society,” reads the foundation’s mission.

According to the scholarship’s webpage, 100 percent of the students receiving the 2016 community college scholarships “identify with a racial or ethnic group other than white.” The FAQs page states that Point provides scholarships to undocumented students.

“LGBTQ students, particularly those from low-income families, immigrants, and people of color, often feel alone as they try to navigate a path to higher education,” said, Jorge Valencia, CEO and Executive Director of Point Foundation, in a press release obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. “Point’s goal is to provide LGBTQ students practical guidance and the emotional support that comes from knowing people want them to succeed and are here to help.”

The scholarships are $3,700 a person and include opportunities to speak with Point members and attend a Point symposium that will facilitate their transfer from community colleges into four-year degree programs. Wells Fargo sponsors the scholarships.

Point’s scholarship is reminiscent of another identity-based scholarship that recently sparked controversy. Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos created the Privilege Grant as a reaction to scholarships offered to various minority groups. Only white men can apply for the Privilege Grant.

Both Point and Yiannopoulos are legally capable of offering scholarships to particular identity groups through the formation of private entities.
