Law Allows Police To Search Your Cell Phone (VIDEO)

Police in California are claiming the right to be able to access all your private data on your mobile phone if you are arrested. The California Supreme Court ruled in January that the police can search your phone without a warrant but the law is now being challenged. A new bill would override the ruling by the California Supreme Court and require that police obtain a warrant to obtain cell phone data from citizens.

One case involved an officer who was being recorded by someone he was writing a ticket to. When the citizen recorded the encounter, the officer claimed that the person was using his phone “as a weapon”. The charges were eventually dropped but now the man is suing for First Amendment violations.
