Knife-Wielding Man Shouts ‘Allahu Akbar’ Before Attacking Paris Police Station

Paris police shot and killed a knife-wielding man Thursday, who tried to enter a police station yelling “Allahu Akbar” on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

The attack took place in Paris, right after French President Francois Hollande gave a speech commemorating the attacks on Charlie Hebdo — a satirical magazine that poked fun at the Prophet Muhammad last year and suffered an attack by two French-born brothers, Reuters reports. The Islamists last year managed to kill 11 people inside the Hebdo building.

This time around, the Jan. 7 Paris attacker wore a fake suicide vest, but wielded a real meat cleaver. As soon as the man burst into the station, police gunned him down. Bomb disposal experts charged the scene, but the mess of wires protruding from the man’s vest were fake. Investigators are looking into the case as potential terrorism.

Following the attack, police swept in and shut down schools and local shops, clearing the Goutte d’Or neighborhood.

Hollande remarked in his speech before the attack, the terrorist threat to France is still present and said the state needs a better surveillance apparatus to monitor radicalized citizens who affiliate with the Islamic State or other similar groups.

“We must be able to force these people — and only these people — to fulfill certain obligations and if necessary to put them under house arrest … because they are dangerous,” Hollande said, according to NY Daily News.

He also promised to increase funds for police recruitment.

France is now the second largest contributing partner to the U.S.-run coalition against ISIS. This partnership came about after the highly coordinated November terrorist attacks which left 130 dead.

Since then, the police have conducted hundreds of raids, backed by a three-month-long declared state of emergency.
