Pyongyang said Thursday that President Donald Trump’s understanding of North Korea is equivalent to that of an “elementary school” student.
Trump “better learn more” about North Korea, a commentary in the state-run Minju Choson suggested, according to NK News. “Let us be very clear to the Trump administration, whose level of knowledge about the opponent (the North Korean government) is only at the elementary student level,” the article explained, North Korea will destroy anyone who tries to harm the young dictator Kim Jong Un.
“The problem is that, foolishly, the U.S. believes that it can execute an act of state terrorism on us like it has done to other countries in the past,” the article said, referring to possible plans for “decapitation strikes” against Kim.
The Trump administration has stated intent for denuclearization, rather than regime change. The president even expressed a willingness to meet Kim Jong Un if the conditions were right. While the administration has not taken the use of military force off the table, the aim appears to be tougher economic sanctions and international pressure to, as Admiral Harry Harris put it, “bring Kim Jong Un to his senses, not his knees.”
Pyongyang argues that the U.S. intends to invade North Korea to topple its authoritarian government as it has other countries, justifying the North’s pursuit of ballistic missiles with greater ranges and nuclear weapons with higher explosive yields.
North Korea wrote in a recent editorial that it should “teach the U.S. a lesson.”
“Every hour we feel the need to teach the U.S. some lesson to wake it up, the country that knows nothing about us and is challenging us like a childish roughneck,” the article said, adding, “The Trump administration better learn more about how the previous U.S. administration raised their fists of oppression against us but had to awkwardly lower them later.”
“Any military provocation against the DPRK will precisely mean a total war which will lead to the final doom of the U.S. This is a stark reality today,” the Minju Choson warned.
The U.S. has a carrier strike group led by the nuclear-powered Nimitz-class supercarrier USS Carl Vinson and the nuclear-powered Ohio-class submarine USS Michigan operating in the area. Earlier this week, the U.S. flew two supersonic, nuclear-capable B-1B Lancers across the peninsula.
In response to U.S. deployments of strategic assets, North Korea has repeatedly warned of war.
